There’s a reason why Google is a trailblazer

This is somewhat old news  (about 7 months old) but it is still quite interesting in my opinion. The idea itself is not that interesting as much as everyone’s shock by it.

Several months ago Google put out a classified ad in search to hire a Corporate Concierge to serve its employees. While this is not a novel idea in and of itself, the people went crazy on the blogosphere and in newspapers talking about how spoiled the employees at Google were. I was particularly suprised at how lots of HR executives could not see the value in hiring a someone to take care of the errands of its employees.

Clearly, if you have ever worked in somebody’s cubicle you have walked behind someone and saw them minimizing their computer screen because you caught them scouring the internet trying to handle errands via the ‘net. It would serve lots of employers well to go ahead and either allow employees the freedom to take care of business or get somebody on board to handle everyone’s errands. Either way, employee productivity is increased and stress levels go down.

Duh! It’s really a “duh-moment” in my opinion. Instead of such criticism of Google… realize that there is a reason that they are constantly in the top 5 of the Fortune Top 100 Companies to Work for.

  2. This may be somewhat old news, but it’s timeless information.

Too often employers get caught up in the critical challenge of running the business yet forget that it’s their people who power their organization.

There is enough research (Gallup is a great source) that shows that if you first take care of your employees – as Google has done – they will take care of your customers, and your customers will take care of your profits.

I’ve commented about the need to treat employees well on my blog, “The Workforce Expert” (www.blueribbonworkforce.com/theworkforceexpert), and see the real world in your points. Thanks.
